Q-4K

An open source walking duck robot, designed and built by Brent Williams.

What it is

Most hobby walking robots are finished once they can walk. Q-4K is built to perform. It learns to walk in simulation, then gets the kind of character animation you'd expect from a film, so it moves like it has a personality.

The whole build is being filmed, from the first motor test to the first steps.

Build progress

Now: planning. Simulation work starts this winter.

  1. SimulationTeaching a virtual Q-4K to walk
  2. Motor bench testsMeasuring how the real motors behave
  3. ElectronicsWiring, power, and control on the bench
  4. Legs and bodyCAD, printing, and assembly
  5. First stepsWalking on real legs
  6. CharacterHead, expressions, and animation

Where are the files?

CAD, electronics, and code will be released under open source licenses once Q-4K walks on its own. Until then the design changes too often to be a reliable guide, and I'd rather you build from something that works.

Follow the build

New videos and progress updates go here first, including the day the files go live.
